Devour! The Food Film Fest a feast of local flavours and films

Wolfville, N.S. (October 27, 2015)  The fifth edition of Devour! The Food Film Fest offers local treats and treasures worthy of a farmers market. Whether you’re talking food, films, restaurants or chefs, this year’s festival has a buffet of local options catering to foodies and film buffs alike.

“We’re so lucky to have such amazing culinary and creative talent here in Nova Scotia, so as a local food and film festival, how could we not take advantage of that?” says Michael Howell, executive director of Devour!

Twenty-five per cent of this year’s film programme contains local content. Numerous local-grown short films, such as Michael Stack’s The Rhubarb Rum Runner, and Phil Maloney’s Dinner for Levi appeal to a range of palates, with notes of cheese, soup and the ultimate Canadian condiment: maple syrup. Also highlighted is Steve Bennett’s Reservation for Three? featuring Port Williams native turned Hollywood starlet, Leanne Bishop. If that doesn’t whet your appetite, try a taste of the impressive Canadian feature-length films featured this year.

Delve behind the scenes as Toronto-based chef and pioneer of the 100-meter diet Michael Stadtländer creates the ultimate local dining experience amid the gardens of Eigensinn Farm in The Singhampton Project. Or fall in love with heroine Lexie Ivy, a passionate baker trying to perfect the recipe for happily ever after in Newfoundland filmmaker Deanne Foley’s romantic comedy Relative Happiness. Other feature-length Canadian treats include: Kim Nguyen’s The Empire of Scents, Grant Baldwin’s Just Eat It: A Food Waste Story and Lewis Bennett’s The Sandwich Nazi.

Of course, local films are only one course of Devour! The Food Film Fest’s offerings this year. Award-winning Canadian chefs Daniel Burns, Jeremy Charles, Todd Perrin, Bob Blumer, Martin Juneau, Rob Gentile and Ned Bell will be joining highly sought-after local chefs, Bryan Picard, Joe MacLellan and Andrew Aiken to retell the stories of highlighted featured films through exquisitely prepared meals. Featuring the finest of local ingredients, each of the three dinners offer a unique dining experience you won’t find anywhere else. Or, how’s this for a tasty side dish: daily tours of the area to taste and explore local wines, cheeses and more.

“The local food movement has really come alive in Nova Scotia,” says Lia Rinaldo, managing director of Devour! “We work showcase that through every aspect of our programme.”

Also back for the second year in a row is the Select Nova Scotia Food Truck Rally. From gourmet burgers to fish tacos to doughnuts with a Nova Scotia twist, Wolfville’s largest food truck rally offers fast, accessible, delicious food for all! New to the rally this year, Slow Food Youth Annapolis Valley will be presenting the first Disco Soup in Nova Scotia. To top everything off, there will also be an alfresco screening featuring great local film content including Rising Canteen,Slow Food in Canada, Lamb ‘n Lobster, Slow Fish and Oysters ‘n Clams.

From the festival’s founding partner, Slow Food Nova Scotia, to its commitment to the inclusion of Canadian films and local filmmakers in its programming,Devour!
