Wolfville, N.S. (November 4, 2015) – With the beautiful Town of Wolfville and Acadia University as its backdrop, the fifth edition of Devour! The Food Film Fest kicked off in grand style tonight at the Opening Gala Evening featuring internationally-renowned actor Bill Pullman. In a room filled with industry heavy-weights, Devour! directors Michael Howell and Lia Rinaldo served up a taste of what has made this the largest food and film festival in the world.
“We are thrilled to welcome so many, from Nova Scotia and beyond, to Wolfville – Canada’s Secret Foodie Destination,” says Michael Howell, executive director of Devour! “The next four days will provide festival visitors with countless opportunities to not only enjoy the food of some of their favourite Canadian and international chefs, but to soak up the best food and wine Nova Scotia has to offer.”
Presented by Taste of Nova Scotia, 14 of Nova Scotia’s finest chefs came together to create a sensory exploration at the Opening Gala Reception. Featuring 12 different film-themed dishes, each of the seasoned chefs showcased their unique style and flavours. From Dan Vorsterman’s (Field Guide) smoked sturgeon and stracciatella cheese with roasted peppers, to Stephanie Ogilvie’s (Brooklyn Warehouse) croque madame with Oulton’s braised beef tongue, smoked gouda, house made brioche, Scotian Gold apple and quail egg, each dish brought high levels of complexity while highlighting the best Nova Scotian ingredients.
Following the Opening Gala Reception, guests were invited to enjoy a special screening of the Academy Award-winning 1987 classic, Babette’s Feast. Chosen as his favourite food film of all-time, Pullman introduced the film to the audience. Following the screening, Pullman took to the stage once more for a post-screening interview and audience Q&A session with the evening’s host, Food Network star Bob Blumer.
“I’m so glad to be experiencing the legendary quality of life that I have heard about and share it with people from all over,” says Pullman.
The 2015 festival continues until November 8, with over 30 chefs, 20 workshops, 15 tasting tours, more than a dozen dinners, parties and events and 75 plus new food and wine films from around the world.
“From Wednesday to Sunday, Devour! offers a little something for everyone,” says Lia Rinaldo, managing director of Devour! “No matter your level of expertise, if you’re interested in food, film or wine, there is something for you.”
